Green Day formed in 1987 as American rock band. The band consists of three core members: Billie Joe Armstrong , Mike Dirnt , and Tré Cool. At the age of 15, Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt formed a band called Sweet Children. They performed with John Kiffmeyer who acted as the drummer and the bands business manager. They were spotted by Larry Livermore at a gig and signed for his label Lookout! Records, and in 1989 released there first EP 1,000 hours
The following year, the band changed there name to Green Day reportedly to avoid confusion with another band at the time named Sweet Baby. In 1990, folling some success with some record releases the band went on tour, John Kiffmeyer had problems commiting and was replaced by Tre Cool. The band then released a second full length album titled Kerplunk sold about 50,000 copies in the U.S alone.
Following this success the band left Lookout! and signed for Reprise Records, with whom they recorded Dookie, which eventually sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. and 15 million worldwide. The folliwing albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning didn't have the huge success as Dookie, but still sales were high. In 2004 Green Day released American Idiot, which brought a new fanbase in the younger generation selling five million copies in the U.S.
After a 5 year record hiatus, Green Day released their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown on May 15, 2009. In and interview Armstrong has described the album as a "snapshot of the era in which we live as we question and try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around us, whether it be the government, religion, media or frankly any form of authority". The album has already topped such album charts as the United States Billboard 200, the European Top 100 Albums, and the United Kingdom Albums Chart.
